Overview

A light tower is a device typically made up of multiple light bulbs and perhaps a buzzer. In a production environment, light towers allow personnel to check machine state from some distance away.

Light Tower ExampleThe Soft-I/O Light Tower Soft-Device provides flexible, easily configured, high-capability control of a user-supplied light tower. Like all Soft-Devices, it is simply configured using a PC with web browser—no programming. It is easily integrated with existing or new machine designs, and can readily share a single Soft-I/O module with other Soft-Devices.

Soft-I/O Light Tower Soft-Device hardware interfaces include:

  • 1 to 5 digital outputs for lights;
  • a digital output for a buzzer;
  • an analog input to set flash rate;
  • a digital input for operator alarm acknowledgement; and
  • up to 3 digital inputs to receive up to 8 machine states.

The Light Tower Soft-Device network interface handles the host commands to: Light Tower Edit Screen

  • set the light tower state (of up to 8 states);
  • read the current light tower state;
  • set the acknowledge state;
  • set the timeouts for each individual state;
  • read the acknowledge state;
  • read the flash rate (analog value);
  • set the flash rate and duty cycle for a light or buzzer; and
  • read the flash rate for a light or buzzer.

The image below displays the setup screen for one of the states. Reference the Light Tower Soft-Device data sheet for further information.
